Distracted by the cricket …

Now I had planned to put up a post today, honest.

South Africa are playing Australia in the semi-final for the World Cup. I had planned to keep an eye on the score on Cricinfo and write my post.

It would seem that the Australian cricket team however are going to disrupt that. With SA currently 27/4 my attention has now become solely focused on the game.

It might turn out okay though. If SA keep this up, I’ll still have time to finish the post today(it’s now 27/5!).

BBL :)

Lead, Follow, or Move?

In my previous post I hinted at a couple of unexpected events that disrupted my schedule for posting yesterday. Well in fact it was really only one event.

The title of this blog you of course know. It’s a twist on a saying I believe the UK SAS use: “Lead, Follow or get out of the way”. It’s also kind of my one line manifesto inspired by Hugh’s change the world, 500 words at a time approach.

In relation to this post though, it’s also the approach I take to riding my bike. And herein lies the connection. On my way into work yesterday I had the misfortune to be displaced off said bike after exiting the M4 into Reading. Luckily for me, I have good reflexes and even better safety equipment. Though unlucky for me I put myself in a position where I had reduced visibility and the stereotypical “man-in-a-van” infront of me. The guy didn’t let the stereotype down, and I unsuccessfully tried to David Copperfield my way through his back door.

I haven’t seen the state of the bike yet, but I’m pleased to tell you that I have no broken bones, just some hurt pride, and a sore back. I would like to shout out my thanks to the Berkshire Ambulance crew who scraped me off the floor, and the two really nice cars behind me who pulled up, made sure I was still breathing, and then parked their cars between me and the oncoming traffic so no one else could run me over!

The staff at A&E in Reading we’re really great. You hear lots of dubious reports about UK health services, but from what I saw the A&E department was really well run. Admittedly I was only there for two hours, and they we’re pretty prompt at examining me. No queue there! I guess that’s the advantage of rocking up on board with everything taped down ;) Excellent people, and really nice to go with it :) Thanks!

And no, this hasn’t put me off riding. I will still get back on the road, two wheel style, as soon as I can sort out what’s going on with the bike.

Until I can get a visual on the bike, I thought I’d post up a couple of pictures of my armour for the more curious of you to see how it handled my “sudden stop”.

We’ll hopefully get back to some more interesting posts on Monday.

House keeping #1

I had a couple of posts planned for this week, but a few events yesterday appear to have upset my agenda. More on that in a minute.

As I’m new to the blogging conversation, I tend to be a little slow on the uptake for things that might be obvious to everyone else ;) It wasn’t until about a week ago that I realised that the permalinks to this site, are of course using the WordPress default. Yes they are cryptic and ugly, and last night I looked at what could be done.

The permalinks have now been updated to something that makes a little more sense in relation to the post, and I’ve tested that any existing inbound links still work with the old format. Nice one WordPress :)

This blog was never intended to be solely about PowerShell. It was certainly a contributing factor, and I was frustrated by the little “official” documented examples available out there. I’m not as hard core, or developer orientated as a lot of the guys posting on the subject, but I try to keep my posts on this subject simple and relevent. As I have been working with PS a lot recently, that has been the influence of my posts here.

I will say that we’re very lucky in the quality and effort the PowerShell community are putting into getting word out there and trying to spread the wealth of knowledge. The links in the side bar should help you to fill the gaps I may leave here ;)

The point here? Well, over the next few weeks content of a non-PowerShell orientation will start to appear. In recognition that this may not be to everyone’s taste I’ve started to set up feeds through FeedBurner to be a little more specific. So if you’re here for anything PowerShell centric, and don’t much care for anything else, feel free to change your feed over to the PowerShell feed

The other topics likely to emerge over the next few weeks are: Virtualisation, Linux (Debian / Ubuntu), some Application Packaging related stuff in regards to Windows Installer, and potentially some Technology musings on how things are developing.

Like I mentioned before, not necessarily to everyone’s taste’s, but all in all not as diverse as to not be related.

Comments and feedback are always welcome, so please feel free to join in as we go along.
